The Charter of the Institute

Knowledge is necessary to civilisation, yet insufficient to preserve it.

It endures only where memory is guarded and wisdom is earned anew in each generation.

Across the ages, archives decay and institutions fall into weakness.

Such decline proceeds less by assault than by neglect and by the surrender of responsibility.

When purpose is forgotten, form may remain, but authority dissipates.

Civilisation is renewed through enlightenment: the disciplined formation of minds capable of directing knowledge toward ordered ends.

Such formation is never automatic. It must be undertaken in each generation.

Enlightened judgement is sovereign. It cannot be delegated.

Human life is brief. It is therefore a matter of obligation, not preference, to cultivate wisdom sufficient to govern present responsibility and to secure continuity beyond it.

The accumulation of information does not constitute mastery.

The greater the power of instruments the greater the burden of judgement.

Computational capacity without wisdom magnifies consequence without enlarging understanding.

No machine can substitute for cultivated discernment.

Institutions endure because individuals do not.

They preserve those principles which would otherwise perish through indifference, and carry them forward across generations.
