Since 1776

Two and a half centuries of keeping, binding, publishing and choosing. The house chronicle, from a Milanese monastery to the maison of private capital.

1776

The founding text

In the year the maison dates itself to, Adam Smith publishes An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations. A book — private capital in both senses — becomes the founding text of the house. In Milano, within monastery walls, rare volumes are already being kept as devotion.

1911

The library becomes a maison

Bindings are commissioned, editions curated, taste made a discipline. The house learns the trade it still practices: treating a book as an object of couture and a store of knowledge at once.

1998

New York

The house crosses the Atlantic, carrying the European art book to a new generation of collectors — and learning the American appetite for ideas that compound.

2012

London · the Fondazione

A third address, and the founding of Fondazione LIBRO.org — heritage as living research. The Research Library begins its studies in longevity: the oldest firms, presses and collections, and why they endure.

2026

Private capital, in every sense

The house takes its double meaning seriously: Libro Private Capital. The maison continues to publish and curate — and now carries the capital platform for owners: build, preserve, compound. Atlas, Protect, Reserve, Concierge.

The mark carries the date so the house cannot forget it: knowledge, kept well, compounds.
