Modern Slavery Statement

The house's position

Slavery, servitude, forced labour, and human trafficking have no place in the business of the house or in its supply chain. This statement, made voluntarily in the spirit of the UK Modern Slavery Act 2015 and reviewed each year, records what the maison does to keep it that way.

Structure and supply chain

Libro is a book maison seated in Milano, with addresses in New York and London. Its supply chain is short and deliberately knowable:

• The Milanese atelier where Maison Editions are bound, working with named craftspeople under Italian and EU labour law.
• Suppliers of paper, cloth, board, leather, and foil, principally established European mills and tanneries.
• The publishers and appointed distributors from whom curated titles are bought new.
• Carriers, printers of house materials, and the providers who operate this site.

Due diligence

The house buys from suppliers it knows, and prefers a long relationship to a low price. Before a new supplier of materials or production is engaged, the maison establishes where and by whom the work is done; suppliers in sectors with a higher risk of labour abuse — tanning and paper among them — are asked to evidence their own labour standards and certifications. Relationships are reviewed annually, and the house visits its principal ateliers and mills in person.

What is asked of suppliers

Suppliers are expected to employ freely and lawfully: no forced, bonded, or child labour; wages and hours at or above local legal standards; workers free to leave and free to organise. A supplier unable or unwilling to evidence this is not engaged; one found in breach is given the chance to remedy where the harm allows it, and is otherwise left.

Raising a concern

Anyone — employee, supplier’s worker, or reader — who suspects slavery or trafficking in connection with the house or its supply chain is asked to write to info@libro.org. Concerns may be raised anonymously, are investigated, and no one suffers for raising one in good faith.
