Studies in Longevity

The Research Library is the house’s standing inquiry into a single question: why do some institutions last? Beretta has made arms since 1526. C. Hoare & Co. has banked in London since 1672. The Plantin press printed in Antwerp for three centuries, and its workshop still stands — presses, punches, ledgers and all — as evidence of what a disciplined house leaves behind.

The library is organised into five codices — the Archivers, the Protectors, the Makers, the Endurers, the Curators — each a study of one way institutions survive: by guarding memory, by endowing it, by making things whose quality outlives their maker, by trading carefully across generations, by knowing what is worth keeping.

The method matters as much as the subject. Entries are researched, sourced, and revised in the open; nothing publishes without citations, and every revision is kept. The ambition is not a directory and not an encyclopedia — it is a register: a small set of records the house is prepared to stand behind, growing by admission rather than accumulation.

What we are looking for, in the end, is transferable: the operating habits of institutions that outlasted their founders, their markets, and in some cases their nations. Those habits are the real subject of the house — in the library, and on the capital side of it alike.
